Are there downsides to special education?

Tricia Dossous: Yes I feel the same way.I had a learning disability and was put in special school for kids with LD,I was just passed on without learning to read and do math. I never hadgeometry,English I could never master,I wasn't allowed to take more advanced classes etc. When I found out I would be getting a certificate and not a diploma I saw no point in going on. Then I tried to go to community college(long ago) to take some remedial classes in hope I could go for a GED.I was having trouble in the reading course I told the reading specialist about my LD(big mistake),She told me to withdraw from her classand I had no right wasting my time or hers, said I have no right to an education.I talked to admissions about this and they told me to drop out and I have no right coming totheir community college,Thats when I just gave up when no one would give me any encouragement. I feel thet Special education is corrupt and schools do not push them to learn andno one expects anythi! ng from them.In my time those kids were just waiting fortheir 16th birthday so they could drop out, sad. I felt I was always dicrminated against.Good luck to you....Show more

Barrett Alosa: Yes, if you want a medical career or if you want to go to a good college, it doesn't look good on your resume. No offense or anything.

Burt Stoecklin: All Education systems have their gaps and SE students definitely feel it. Teachers have to cope with several students who all need his or her time and all have problems with certain aspects. It's just as bad as being one of the few students in a school who are completely fluent in English, because while the teacher is teaching all the students who don't speak/read/write English fluently, the students who are fluent are sitting around, bored out of their minds.

Stevie Kizziar: I have an IEP and I feel that there is defiantly a gap in my education. *sorry that first sentance was gramaticly in correct (as u can see my englis! h is not so great I feel that I still have a lot to learn)

Leif Serabia: I work as a school psychologist in a major urban US city in the Northeast, and have a good deal of interaction with special ed teachers. The main issue I see for special ed teachers is burn out. They service so many children, and have very little support. I think the IEP issue varies between districts. The district I am in, the IEP is developed by a district administrator, based on reports submitted by various people (the special ed teacher, the school psych, the OT, the PT, the speech pathologist, etc). The district offers training to special ed teachers on how to do the assessments, and what is expected of them. Over all, I think if you have any questions about services the staff is more than happy to help. Good luck!...Show more
