How often does Nintendo come out with a new handheld device?

Jodie Capella: The "New 3DS" is expected soon, but it's more like the DSi was to the DS. Though more powerful it's not really being marketed as a new console, and few games are going to be New 3DS only. I think it will be another few years before there's a truly new handheld.

Nicolas Cooley: The New 3DS (yes, that unfortunatey is it's actual name) is coming out this year or next depending on where you live. It's mostly an upgraded version, but on a tier higher than something like the DS Lite. There are certain games that are entirely exclusive to it and can't be played on a normal 3DS, along with a small change in controls and increased graphical capabilities. That's the closest thing we have to a successor. As for an entirely new system...we really don't know when that'll be. There's already not a ton of precedent here and they're pretty inconsistent from what we already have, (gameboy lasted like nine years, GBC like three, GBA about three, DS about six and a half)! so we can't extrapolate very well. Even worse, we have absolutely no precedent for one of these half upgrades, unless we consider the GBC as one. So really it's anyone's guess. I personally doubt we'll see the next handheld before 2017, maybe with an announcement in 2016....Show more
