Scot Sepulbeda: Army Downsizing
Christy Tirabassi: The USA always has cut back on troop levels after a war. We are out of Iraq and will be out of Afghanistan this year so cut backs have already started. They are kicking out people who want to stay in and they are cutting way back on taking new people. As a result, they do not have to give many waivers and they are taking only the best recruits they can get, even for low level jobs such as cook and truck driver. As far as officers, not only will they look at grades but at what your major is in and what classes you took. A person who has a hard science degree has a much better chance of getting in than a person who has a degree in English Literature (or secondary eduction.) Where they can actually use the skills of a person who is a electrical or construction engineer, I doubt they have a big need for a secondary education guy. Your best bet is to change majors and see if you can get into ROTC. i! f you can do that then you will get paid to go to college and will get a commission when you graduate....Show more
Donny Bankson: FYI the smartest guy in the room is wrong. You can score a 225 out of 300 and qualify to be an officer. Still difficult but very much achievable.i would recommend NR noy T over applying for OCS. I'm trying to get into PLT myself.4 years of school. Get a bachelor's and do OCS in the summer.Edit: no disrespect to the marine vet but flashing his career in front of everyone was a little childish to do. I understand he is successful. I'm sure he isn't rich but i bet he does well. Just annoys me how you asked a question about enlisting and it suddenly becomes about him? Just an ego crazed veteran. But like I said I would never take that away from him. Thank you for your service!...Show more
Shawn Lelis: My suggestion is take the asvab, see how you do and then see what MOS's you qualify for and find out the wait times for each....unless you! have plans to attempt to become an officer and apply to OCS (! it is extremely competitive and your education major isn't going to help, Marine Corps officer candidates must be extremely physically fit to even get their application taken to the officers candidate boards, they must at MINIMUM max the Marine Corps PFT: 3 mile run in under 18 mins, 20 dead hang pull ups, and 100 crunches in under 2 mins...all in successions with no rest...and that is just to have your OCS application even looked at)...then pick one and enlist asap...you are just wasting time in college...once your enlistment ends you can use the GI bill to finish up your college or take night classes while you are active depending on your MOS and where you get stationed.Having an undergrad degree gets you nothing as an enlisted Marine except PFC (Maybe Lance Corporal, I forget) out of boot....Show more
Robin Weelborg: If you meet the minimum qualifications you will be able to enlist. This isn't going to change anytime soon. Where things do change is for applicants! who don't meet the minimums - waivers will be harder and harder to come by in the future. Also the waiting period to ship (DEP) to basic training will grow longer, and the choice of specialties/rates/mos to each applicant will shrink. However if all you are concerned about is being able to enlist and you don't have any history of medical/criminal problems whatsoever then I wouldn't worry....Show more
Booker Warlick: everything is going to be the same, and the military will always have a need for officers. I'm assuming because your in college you will become an officer. no point to become enlisted ranks when you have a degree
