buying a car from another state?

Ardath Templer: Wait until you get to Maine.....for now, rent a car, when you need one...I have friends that live in Chicago, ride the bus/train, and rent a car when you need to....

Elissa Curlin: Well you can buy a car wherever you want, but it'll be easier to buy the car in Chicago so you can use it to drive to Maine, so unless you're interested in a specific car that's being sold in Maine, it's advisable that you buy the car in Chicago.

Malcom Bourek: I'd wait until you get to maine, on the east coast they salt the roads, so many cars rot away after 10 years there.plus you'd have to pay for licensing, which would ultimately be paying sales tax twice for the same car

Alonso Crehan: They salt the roads in both places, so rot will be inevitable. Use it up or move to VA or something for your next job. But buying in Chicago will have one great advantage--you can find an impartial mechanic to inspect the car for a fee before you buy it--and you may even be ! able to get the service/repair records if he preferred one guy, a good sign. In Chicago you'll have pages of cars to shop from, and there might be price advantages. In Maine your selection will be severely restricted, and mechanics in smaller town may be in cahoots with the owner--some Maineacs aren't exactly nuts about "outsiders," you know. Oh, and be sure you get the Carfax sheet on any car you want to get serious about--it's only $10, so a savvy seller who has nothing to hide will know it will make his machine look good, and he should have it on hand. Ask up front, and walk away from someone who doesn't have it....Show more
